The White Mountains

Thursday October 7th has us leaving Boston and heading to New Hampshire's White Mountains and specifically Mt. Washington, but upon walking last evening we discovered that the Corolla had a flat front tire :( very sad indeed since the tires are not even 10,000 miles old. So thankfully right up the street from our hotel in Boston was an auto repair shop and so we were up early Thursday and took the wounded mobile in for a plug, and the mechanic couldn't have been nicer. A big shout out goes to C & L Auto on Mass. Ave in South Boston for not saying no even though I was wearing an Orioles jacket!

Once the tire was fixed we checked out, loaded up and were on our way. through the big tunnel in Boston and headed north on 93 to New Hampshire. What a beautiful country I live in, the vistas were just stunning. Of course since we had the tire ordeal we didn't get to take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast back at the hotel so we stopped at a diner on the 104 and had the most fluffiest pancakes and real maple syrup I have ever tasted (disclaimer: my pancakes are fluffy too, but I didn't have to make today's breakfast!). Once we were done at the diner, where an old lady was timing how long each person spent in the rest room we were off!

Driving through the White Mountain State Park was simply wonderful and we found our way to the Mt. Washington Auto Road, but unfortunately the road was closed for the day and no cars were being allowed up. the wind posted at the summit was 81 mph and the temp was below freezing and the man at the gate said the roads was icy up there. Hubby was really bummed as he had really been looking forward to the ride and challenge. We took our lumps and headed to the other side of the park to see a real cog wheel train it runs on steam and was fascinating to watch. then we headed toward our resting spot for the night. Once again we found ourselves surrounded by older people (and I don't say that to offend anyone it just seemed like a running theme for the week!) Since it was early and we were hungry we headed into town and to the Dutch treat for dinner.

Ah the Dutch Treat. I bet you think we had German and Bavarian food for dinner... well you would be wrong. We had gourmet meals that made no sense to the name of the restaurant, but the meals were delicious! The little restaurant got busy fast and the only man on the floor did well to keep up and no one sat too long without being attended too. After dinner we checked out the little town and found out the Bode Miller, American medal winning skier, calls Franconia Home! WOW!!!!! We hit the local market, called Mac's, for water which was cheap and I mean cheap and then we headed back to the hotel. Another busy day lies ahead tomorrow and hopefully the rain has passed and we can see the Flume Gorge in all its glory.

.... til next post....
