My Hubby became known as Sir Snorealotapus this summer. Due to a bad sinus infection that developed into a polyp and a deviated septum. This led us to Today. You see today was the day we both had been sleeplessly waiting on ***Surgery Day*** Yippee!!! the polyp was acoming out! So bright and early we were up and off to the Hospital. Upon our arrival he had to check in and was given a number, 98, when the number is called we will head back to get prepped. In the meantime we wait and watch our fellow patients and family members as I am sure they were watching us!
1st up the family right behind us in line: Husband, Wife and little boy (number 21) The little boy was the patient and seemed quite relaxed and oblivious to the fact he was at the surgery center. Next up A woman and a little girl (number 23) The little girl was not as collected as the little boy perhaps she had been here before. Hubby and I decided they were either getting ear tubes or tonsils out.
A Man with one leg (number 94) was already waiting and his family member was fixing his foot rest on his wheel chair his other family member was reading a book. He was taken back first out of all of us. Due to the hospital gown I think he was already a patient that had been wheeled down. A man in his late 20's to early 30's came in with his Dad and he was the winner of number 96. It was at this point I decided that it was becomming more like a deli counter than a hospital waiting room.
A nurse came out of the door and announced "number 23" and I thought the mother of number 21 was going to have a coronary. sometimes the order number does not necessarily mean that is the orde rthat things are being called. The number 21 father settled her down and they were called back next. Soon it was our turn and when the nurse announced "number 98" Hubby jumped up like we had won the lottery, I guess he was ready! Our nurse, Amanda, was very nice and explained everything. It was at this point I realized that my Hubby was way too excited about surgery. She took his vitals and took his temperature twice because she didn't believe that he was that cold, it was cold in there I had to go out to the car to retrieve my jacket, then she brought him a bag, a bag for his belongings. Hubby changed into the robe and put on his little booties and sat in the chair like he was sitting in the first car of the rollar coaster and he couldn't wait for the first big drop. Nurse Amanda came back and gave instructions on how to administor the nasal spray on both sides of the nose. Then the Anethesiologist came in and went on the anesthetic that had been ordered. Hubby was fitted with an IV and he was ready to roll. His Doctor came in and once again went over the procedure and we waited. Then it was time... bye see you later!
Once I was back in the waiting room I headed to find something to eat I was hungry and in the gift shop I was robbed for $2.40 for a bag of chips, a twix bar and a can of Pepsi with straw! I settled into a chair and before I delved into my book I looked around. The only faces I recognized was number 21. The woman was practically sitting on the mans lap, in the hospital waiting room. There were no shortage of chairs. I setteled into my book and read the hours away. Hubbys Doctor came and found me after the procedure and I felt like a parent. She said his first words upon waking up were "I can breathe" and that he had done great and as soon as he was more awake they would call for me to go back there and sit with him. She left me with photos of the event, yay? I know he would like them!
After about an hour I was called back and given his "room number" walking the corridor by myself I was struck at how lonely that short walk was. Not that Hubby would have wanted anyone else there, but still I felt a little alone. Then as I turned the corner to his room he was sitting up in the bed sipping on apple juice with the biggest smile on his face (what a kid!) and then he had to take some meds and he was given a popsicle since his throat would be sore and the frozen treat would help numb the throat so he could take the pill. we sat for a few minutes and then his recovery nurse came in and checked his vitals and went over discharge instructions. Then slowly she moved hubby from being in bed to sitting on the edge of the bed, then she said it was time to get dressed. Then she showed me where to bring the car too and once I got there she wheeled him out. We were free.
Hubby slept most of the afternoon and has a really scratchy throat which we discovered was from 2 lacerations at the back of his mouth, probably from the tube that was used during the procedure. Whilst Hubby was sleeping I made him homemade chicken soup and checked on him, once again like a parent, and settled in on the couch for a nap myself!
